Sustainable Smart Cities: The Role of IoT and Big Data in Urban Development

Abstract

As urbanization accelerates, the demand for sustainable smart cities grows. This paper examines how the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analytics contribute to efficient resource management, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. Case studies from China’s leading smart cities, including Shenzhen and Hangzhou, illustrate the impact of IoT-based smart grids, intelligent transportation systems, and automated waste management. The study also discusses challenges such as cybersecurity risks, data governance, and infrastructure scalability. By addressing these concerns, the paper provides recommendations for policymakers and urban planners to create sustainable and resilient urban environments.
